We must increase public awareness of concussions and how they are treated. — Dr. Vincent Schaller, M.D. DABFM, CIC, Director of MAC Alliance

Recovering from Concussion During COVID-19

Recovering from concussion during COVID-19

For concussion patients, viral illnesses like COVID-19 can make everyday life even more challenging. While concussions (temporary, mild forms of brain injuries) are not normally life-threatening, individuals attempting recovery may feel even more stressed and anxious than others due during these challenging times. Emotionally, stressful effects of the coronavirus pandemic like changes in or even loss of income, social isolation and difficulty navigating normal life (grocery shopping!), mean many individuals could be experiencing even more anxiety than before.

Suggestions for Patients With Concussions During This Pandemic

If you or your child has already been diagnosed with a concussion, we suggest you still try to:

  1. Keep on schedule as much as possible
  2. Allow for rest periods throughout the day
  3. Exercise following rehabilitation guidelines
  4. Partake of fresh air and sunshine (safely distanced from others)
  5. Listen to soothing music
  6. Maintain a healthy diet
  7. Keep calm and stay positive!

Telemedicine Screening for Those Recovering from concussions during COVID-19

For those who do not wish to risk an in-patient visit, we can provide additional strategies for wellness via our telehealth option. MAC Alliance concussion specialists can conduct virtual assessments to help you stay safe and get back to normal. After diagnosis, we’ll create “active” rehabilitation and customized exercise programs for you or your child.

Even More Convenient Changes

We have also made new changes to allow you better access to MAC providers and staff for your convenience and safety:

  1. More Visits Available if Needed:

Because of the increased need for telemedicine visits, we have expanded our capacity to have all providers available for appointments Monday through Friday every week. That way, if you need closer follow ups for any setbacks in your concussion recovery, we can definitely accommodate with more closely placed visits with our providers.

  2. Easy Access Electronic Prescriptions:

We have the ability to send all of your prescriptions by electronic e-scribe directly to your pharmacy or mail order pharmacy.

  3. No Longer Need to Pick Up Written Scripts:

This new system, with high security and encryption, allows us to send even your controlled medications to your pharmacy without having to pick up written scripts.  These medications include ADD medications like Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, etc., and sleeping aids like Ambien, Lunesta and Sonata.

  4. You Can Still Have MAC Give You Monthly Injections:

Both our West Chester MAC office and Hockessin MAC office can arrange drive-by injections if needed as long as you call in advance and arrange with our staff.

  5. You Can Pick Up Coupons and Samples from the Office if Needed:

Samples of CGRP injections, GPANT pills and injectable Sumatriptan, along with coupons, can also be picked up from either the West Chester or Hockessin office if you call and arrange in advance.

In addition, you can always find our latest COVID-19 plans here.

These are difficult times, but we will continue to make changes to keep you safe. We’re working hard to keep your concussion recovery on track so when the pandemic restrictions have passed, you will still be right on course to full recovery.

Be Safe. Be Well!
