We must increase public awareness of concussions and how they are treated. — Dr. Vincent Schaller, M.D. DABFM, CIC, Director of MAC Alliance

BrainScope: If it’s Good Enough for the Military, It’s Good Enough for Us!

If BrainScope One is Good Enough for the Military, It's Good Enough for Us!

The MAC Alliance is like the U.S. Army in that we both recently “deployed” innovative handheld concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI) assessment devices called BrainScope® One. It’s only been a few weeks since we introduced these safe, innovative and easy-to-use tools at some of our member locations, yet we’re already receiving some really positive feedback from many of our urgent care, primary care, physical therapy and athletic training partners of the MAC Alliance.

More About BrainScope

BrainScope, the company that created BrainScope One, fulfilled orders for more than 170 devices and over 7,500 individual patient headsets to U.S. Army bases across the world. U.S. Army medics and clinicians received training necessary to support the assessment of military personnel that may have experienced mild head injuries.

BrainScope One is the first FDA-cleared medical device (cleared as “Ahead 300”) to offer multi-modal capabilities to assess brain injury, from concussions (functional abnormality) to brain bleeds (structural injury). The devices use EEG-based technology and other objective parameters. For the military, BrainScope One provides a quick and objective assessment to help determine if individuals should be allowed to go back on missions.

BrainScope partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense when developing this technology. According to the June 1st edition of Stars and Stripes®, “Researchers estimate 15 to 23 percent of service members returning from combat have suffered a TBI.”

EEG-Based Technology

The device is a great diagnostic tool for analyzing head-injured patients, 18-85 years old, within three days after injury. It’s not a replacement for CT scans but, according to some research, can potentially decrease unnecessary head CT scans by one-third, reduce head injury referrals to hospital emergency departments by up to 75%, and reduce healthcare costs for payers and patients by over 30%.
