At Mid-Atlantic Concussion Alliance, we use a variety of excellent diagnostic tools to detect concussions, to assess the severity of a suspected concussion and to help aid us in guiding our patients to a full recovery.
Our Diagnostic Tests:
- Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) takes only a few minutes. This simple test was developed by the experts at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and can help identify treatments needed to help patients feel better quicker. Balance, vision and movement are studied. Patients need to be examined within one day to a week after an injury.
- ImPACT, developed by the experts at UPMC, is a computerized neurocognitive test with proven reliability for ages 5-60. Baseline tests are compared to post-injury tests. Verbal memory, visual memory, visual motor speed and reaction time can be easily assessed. It’s the only FDA-approved computerized neurocognitive test for concussion treatment. Hundreds of medical journal articles, independent studies and extensive research support the use of ImPACT. And there are 16 million comparison tests in the data base. Legal acceptance of IMPACT testing has been verified in many court cases where judges confirm general acceptance in the scientific community.
- BrainScope One – Our newest tool, this unique FDA-cleared medical device uses EEG signals to see if a patient could have a brain bleed and/or concussion. It helps us determine if a CT scan or other specialized x-ray is even needed, at a much lower cost than a CT scan.
